Overview
AusNet is developing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) within the existing Altona Terminal Station in Laverton North.
Once installed, the Altona BESS will hold enough energy in reserve to power approximately 80,000 homes for two hours.
We will keep the neighbours and the community informed of the Altona BESS project throughout planning and delivery.
What does the project involve?
The project involves the development of a 100 MW / 200 MWh battery and construction of new assets inside the terminal station, to connect the BESS to the grid.
The BESS will be located on vacant land within the AusNet Altona Terminal Station, near Cherry Lane in Laverton North and close to existing electricity infrastructure. This will allow the battery to connect to the grid.
Planning permit application
AusNet has recently submitted a planning permit application for the Altona BESS to the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP). An update on the application is expected by mid-2024.
